  • Black and White Flowers – A Study in Form

This is a guest collection by Tom Dinning. Download Tom's latest book, 'Learning to See' for free here. They say you can win the heart of a woman with a bunch of colourful flowers. My success rate in that endeavour has been limited so I'm not one to comment. But I do know that photographers are particularly drawn to the colourful displays found in their back yard, parks or botanical gardens. I am also aware that sometimes the colour is so intense we can miss another layer of beauty hidden within the sepals, petals, and anthers; that of FORM. By

  • What makes Henri Cartier-Bresson’s vast body of work so universally impressive is that he was seemingly present at every significant event and in the intimate company of every important figure of the 20th Century. Trained as a painter at a young age, Cartier-Bresson was heavily influenced by the Cubist and Surrealist concepts when he first began photographing towards at end of the 1920s. While their aesthetics show through in his early images on view from France and Mexico in the 1930s, it was a photograph of boys running in to the surf by Hungarian photographer Martin Munkacsi (Three Boys at Lake Tanganyika, 1930) that firmly established in the young artist the expressive and graphic potential of the instant photographic medium. Following the advice of Robert Capa, Cartier-Bresson shed the modernist labels of the era and began to document humanity’s rhythm within the context of photojournalism.

He produced images over a 35 year career, and in recent years used archival techniques to produce his prints. For most of his career he worked as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer, and during his last years concentrated on his personal imagery. Towards the end of his life journey, Ian was reviving with his partner two 19th century printing techniques, Platinum Palladium and Gum Bichromate ( one-of-a-kind pieces). This culminated in a large retrospective exhibition in Barcelona which was sponsored by the 'Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation’. The Platinum and Palladium prints are particularly interesting as he printed them onto ‘vellum’, and bonded pure gold or silver to the back of the prints ( every print is therefore a unique and timeless piece of art). Ian created rare and customized pieces and each piece was totally original and a “one-off”. Ian Sanderson was one of only a handful of artists worldwide producing this type of work. Nowadays, Ian’s partner continues their work and she’s still creating prints. categories : Black and white photography, 20th. century, Archival pigment print, 90's, France, Rain, Street, City, Cityscape , Photographic film, Analogue, Analog,

  • Kaboom!!

I had a "kaboom" last night. Of course I've heard about this, but I didn't expect that it would ever happen to me. I had positioned my Canonet G-III on the table and was taking a timer picture when it went off. Evidently this is caused by gases that build up in the camera from old film. Then you get a little spark from a loose meter wire or something and ... blam-ooo!!! Sounded like a gunshot. My upstairs neighbor came down to see what had happened. She couldn't believe it when I told her.
